Feeding Babies

photo (11)Colette is 9 1/2 months old. I love this age. They are fun. Their little personalities are coming out. They are crawling and pulling up but not walking (at least mine aren’t). Except for occasional teething fussiness it’s a fun age. Unfortunately it’s also the age when you are elbow deep in baby food. I do not love the phase between exclusively breast feeding and being able to feed themselves…It’s a lot of time you take feeding them and then it’s either a lot of work or a lot of money to get the food!

With Capri I was hard core. I made all of her baby food. I don’t think she even tried any commercial baby food until we went on a trip around 10 months of life. I lived the Super Baby Food book. And it totally stressed me out. I had lists to make sure she didn’t eat anything I hadn’t gone through the process of introducing. I had to plan out her food a month in advance, making sure she was getting the right variety of foods so she got all of the essential nutrients. It was a little crazy and I really didn’t enjoy it. In fact I’m sure it made me cry on more than one occasion.

With Collete feeding her solids totally snuck up on me. I was more than a little behind the game on that one. And I just bought the baby food (except for bananas and avocados because those aren’t too difficult to mush up). But she is now eating significantly more and the grocery bill is getting more and more expensive and I decided I needed to stop being lazy and take a day to make some baby food. A friend had lent me the Cooking for Baby book with Capri but I didn’t really use it. I pulled it out this week and that’s what I’m using this time. It’s simpler and I think it adds a little something by adding herbs and such to your babies diet earlier. I still will probably wait on meat until a year old but I think otherwise I will go with the book.

I went to the grocery store on Monday and came home and spent the day making several batches of baby food. I made -

Sweet Peas with Mint
Butternut Squash Puree
Pears with Spinach and Pumpkin Pie Spice
Apples with Kale and Cinnamon
Green Beans with Mint
Millet and Zucchini Medley

I felt super accomplished! Yay for taking just one day and getting a good start to making my own baby food again…Colette, I’m sorry I’m not as hard core about your food as I was with your sister. I still love you. And I’m probably a better mom to you when I’m not super stressed about making your food and making sure you get a ridiculous variety of foods!

Toddler Knife Skills and Creamy Mushroom and Chicken Soup

Last week when meal planning I turned to pinterst and clicked on a link entitled 25 soups perfect for fall. I made the first one on the list, Creamy Mushroom and Chicken Soup and enlisted a bit of help from my fabulous sous chef! This recipe is super easy and fast to make. If there is anything that is slightly time consuming it’s the chopping of the ingredients (beware: if you ask a 20 month old to help you it might take longer and there might be a bigger mess, you’ve been warned!).

I gave Capri a butter knife, a cutting board, and some mushrooms and Jeremy showed her how to cut the mushrooms. Of course in this picture seems to be sampling the mushrooms ;) It is both super fulfilling to have my daughter in the kitchen and super frustrating and inconvenient! I think when I invite her to help me I just have to adjust my expectations. It is a great way to have her come alongside me to do an activity that is both fun and productive (even if it takes longer than it would have if I had done it by myself).

The only change I made to this recipe is that I used whole milk instead of cream. We give this recipe 5 out of 5 stars! It was very yummy! In fact that day we ate it for lunch and for dinner! We highly recommend it and and it just so happened that it felt slightly like fall that day (of course, today the high is 90 again :(

Mommy Mondays – Cooking in the Kitchen

We moved last week…have I mentioned that? Mentioned that my life has been insane? Well, it has been but we have been so blessed. Through a series of happenings that can pretty much only be termed miraculous we have been able to move into a house that is both bigger and nicer than the one we just sold and for a ridiculously affordable rental price! One of the great things about the house is the kitchen. Lots more counter space and cabinet space. We even have an island. This is great because Capri is really into helping me cook and having extra counter space for her to cook with me is really nice (and safer). One night in an attempt to keep her away from the fish I was cooking, we put an apron on her and got out her pots and pans and let her cook up her own fish!

I have really been making an effort to have her do things with me. It takes more time and makes a bigger mess. Sometimes it’s super short-lived and other times it occupies her for a while. We’re learning together. I want my kids to enjoy cooking. Since we have the extra cabinet space i was able to make a kitchen cabinet just for her. She has her own mixing bowls, a saucepan, a frying pan, aprons, measuring cups, and some other small utensils. They are all real, but some are more child-sized. It’s been pretty fun.

Mommy Mondays – Newborn Diapers

I started cloth diapering capri at 2 months. Having a newborn for the first time was about all I could handle and everyone said that often newborn diapers aren’t worth it because they grow out of them so fast. However, this time around, I was already washing Capri’s diapers so adding Colette’s diapers to it didn’t seem like a big deal. I also knew she was going to be small so I thought I would go for it. It has been a great experience for us. She was small so we are just now growing out of our newborn diapers at 2 months  and it hasn’t added any extra work for us really because we were already washing diapers. Here is a list of the ones that we used and our thoughts on them:

gDiapers tiny gpants – 2 out of 5 stars.

I don’t think I would recommend these. I got the 6-pack (so glad I didn’t get the 12 pack!). They are cute but I didn’t like them. First of all, I had planned on using the small cloth inserts in them but found out later they were really designed for their disposable inserts, which are not super cost effective. Anytime I used the cloth inserts the outside of the diaper would get damp after she peed. The fit was also not very good for Colette. She was small but the rise was still too high to stay away from her bellybutton even when it was snapped down. Her umbilical chord fell off pretty early – 9 days – and after that we struggled with the fit of the diaper because it always seemed that the rise was not long enough. It always pulled around her thighs and she was small! They say they fit 6-10 lbs but I don’t know how that’s possible. I think we had to stop using them around 7.5 lbs and she’s not very long either…Sad. (sidenote – I actually pulled out my size small gdiapers and started using those – they actually fit her pretty well after the 2nd week, but I still don’t think gdiapers are the best option – they are cute and not bulky at all but I have struggled with leaks or with dampness).

GroVia newborn All In One - 4 out of 5 stars!

These are super cute! I got 2 of these as a gift. They were really great. They are so cute, no leaks, and not bulky at all. They have a little dip in the front to keep from rubbing the bellybutton but they were too big for her for that. Again, even though she was small she grew out of these pretty quickly. they say they fit 5-12 lbs, but again she has already grown out of them and I doubt she is 8 lbs yet. I think the other downside to these is that they are about $15/each – probably not a worthwhile investment for just a few weeks, but maybe a great deal if you can find them used! (a great idea for any newborn diaper since they are used for such a short time and therefore very little wear)

Bummis Newborn Pack – 5 out of 5 stars!

I think this is what I would suggest if you were going to cloth diaper a newborn. These fit the best, lasted the longest and never leaked. I think it would be cheaper to put together your own ‘pack’ by buying your own prefolds and covers, but it was nice to get them all together. This pack comes with 12 preemie sized prefolds and 2 Bummis Super Brite newborn covers. These covers are great! I love the leg gussets and for being a prefold with a cover these were not very bulky. I used these with a snappi. To sum up – I think these are great! In fact I just bought a dozen prefolds in the next size up and ordered another Bummis Super Brite cover in a small!

Bummis Super Whisper Wrap – 4 out of 5 stars!

I used these with the prefolds mentinoed above. I got thisne because for real, how cute? I think this was a great cover but when it comes down to it, I’d go with the Super Brite as opposed to the Super Whisper because of the leg gussets that the Super Brite has and the Super Whisper does not.

Rumarooz Newborn Cover – 5 out of 5 stars

I bought this cover after Colette was born in an attempt to find a preemie sized cover. It said preemie in the description but turns out it wasn’t. However, I was not disapointed in this diaper. It fits really well and has great leg gussets. It fits a much larger range of sizes. It says 4-12 lbs and we are still using it now with the larger size of prefolds. I have been super happy with it.

Thirsties Duo Wrap Size 1 – 5 out of 5 stars

Another great cover! I really like this Thirsties Duo Wrap. Definitely a bit larger than the Bummis newborn wraps, but it’s great because we’ll use this much longer. It has great leg gussets as well and my favorite – this comes in the best colors and prints! We have this tree print but there are several that I really like! I also have 1 Thirsties Fab Fitted diaper. It’s awesome and super soft, however it doesn’t seem very cost effective. It’s essentially the same as a prefold just a little easier to use as it looks like a disposable but is super soft, but at over $15 each compared to maybe $1.50 for a prefold it’s a little hard to justify a whole stash full of them.

Maternity Pics

I realized yesterday when I posted our newborn pictures that I never posted our maternity pictures! These were taken by our sweet friend Rachel who did Capri’s maternity pictures too. Again, doing these with a toddler was so different than doing this with no kids (well, outside the womb that is).

Newborn Pictures!

Let me just say that pictures with a toddler and not very fun. This is the best and maybe the only picture we got of our whole family – everyone smiling, holding still, and looking at the camera (it will be super fun to take picture later when we have 2 toddlers!). Nevertheless, this is a great picture! Thanks to our friend Dawn, we had these adorable pictures taken. Half of them (Colette only) were taken when she was 2 weeks and the other half were taken at 6 weeks. We used overlays from one of my favorite digital shops, Vol25.

Colette’s Birth Story

*This is a birth story and may be more graphic than you want to read, if that’s the case, don’t feel like you need to read it. This is for those people who have asked to hear the story or are interested in the details.

There she is, right after she was born! Let’s be honest, not a great picture, but not to worry, there are more pictures in this post!

This pregnancy went by so quickly. Being pregnant while you have a toddler running around is a little different than the first time! There was just so much less time to think about it or focus on it! The time kind of flew by – although somehow I still felt like I was pregnant forever!

Capri was small and I was induced at 39 weeks with her. Because of that, they began measuring Colette early on to make sure that she wasn’t too small. Turns out she measured smaller than Capri did starting around 33 weeks. I had a lot of extra ultrasounds checking her vitals and her growth. The doctor called it intrauterine growth restriction. She said we needed to deliver by 38 weeks. I was prepared for this all along so it wasn’t too difficult to wrap my mind around. However, I had been nervous about having a “medication-free” childbirth if I had to be induced even earlier than I was last time (obviously it wasn’t going to be medication-free really since I had to have pitocin but I wasn’t planning on any pain meds). I was worried that at 38 weeks my body wouldn’t be as prepared to give birth as it was the last time.

However it seemed that the weeks before my induction, my cervix was softening and dilating and I hoped to be at a similar place to where I was when I had Capri. I knew some things would be different this time. I tested positive for group b strep so I knew I would be hooked to an IV from the moment I arrived. I also knew that having my water broken might be different this time too – all that to say, I figured I wouldn’t be walking around for hours like I did with Capri.

I didn’t feel ready to go through labor. I was more scared this time than I was last time. The first time I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect, but I felt confident in my preparation. This time I knew how hard it was going to be and I didn’t feel as mentally or emotionally prepared. The night before Capri refused to go to sleep. I was crying, she was crying, I still had so much to do! I just wanted a peaceful, restful night! Nevertheless, Jeremy and I arrived at the hospital at 5 AM the next morning. I was tired and not feeling overly positive. However, it was so different going in to do it again. Jeremy was very calm, confident and positive and I really needed that.

As soon as we got there they hooked up my IV and started my antibiotics and soon after that they began the pitocin. At 6:40 my doctor came in and broke my water. I was 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced. They continued to increase the pitocin levels throughout the morning until I had regular contractions. I was managing pretty well and even joked around a little more than last time in between contractions. At 10 AM my doctor called and told the nurse she was about to do a procedure in her office across the street and wanted to know if I was in transition yet. When the nurse got off the phone I said, ‘wow! she really thought I was going to have this baby fast if she thought I would be in transition already!’ That comment should give you an idea of where I thought I was. I didn’t have the nurse check me again that whole time so I wasn’t too sure of my progress. About 20 minutes later the contractions began to get a lot more intense. I began shaking which had happened the last time. Jeremy started to get excited and kept saying,’ you’re getting close! remember how close you were when this happened last time?’ The nurse asked if I wanted her to check me. I was nervous that if she did and I wasn’t as far along as I hoped that I would be really disappointed but Jeremy encouraged me to do it because he thought I had really made progress. It was encouraging to hear I was at 7 cm! Not long after this I started crying because I was having a hard time and didn’t feel emotionally able to handle the contractions. Jeremy was such a huge encourager! He kept telling me how close he thought I was. I was in a pretty intense amount of pain but I was a lot more aware of what was going on this time than I was before. I went from 7 cm to 10 cm in about 25 minutes! I heard the nurse call the doctor’s office and leave a message. She called again a few minutes later and I heard her attempting to sound calm, but her words were “we are having a baby in 5 minutes, she needs to get here”.

My doctor literally ran across the street and it was just Jeremy and my nurse and my doctor (last time I felt like there were 10 people in my room!). The nurse was trying to tie the gown on my doctor and I was screaming to them from across the room ” she is coming out! help me!” my nurse turned to me and said, ‘don’t push, try going ‘he he he’” – if I had not been in such an intense moment I would have laughed at her! I wasn’t pushing that baby out, she was coming out on her own. Jeremy actually reached over in a motion to hold the baby inside! The doctor got her gown on and told me to push. I did and felt like I couldn’t breathe. I said I couldn’t keep pushing through that first contraction. The doctor told me I had to and Jeremy said, “Ellie, her head is already out!” that’s all I need to hear. Just a little more effort and I felt her body slide out! I pushed her out in 1 contraction!

It was so fast. The whole thing was so fast! And praise God because I really didn’t feel like I was in a good place to be going through labor that morning. She was born at 11:03 just 4 hours and 20 minutes after my water breaking! I did tear a little bit again, but I pretty much just had 1 stitch. Colette was perfect – 5 lbs and 4 oz (just 2 oz smaller than Capri). The nursery nurse didn’t even get there until after she was born. My labor nurse kept saying – I told you it would be fast, she didn’t have an epidural! She also told us she thought for a minute that she would be delivering our baby by herself!

Overall it was a really good experience. I still don’t like giving birth. Some women feel like it’s a spiritual experience for them. There were moments early on when it kind of felt like that but the end was pretty intense. I was glad I went ahead and had the pitocin and my water broken early on and got on with it. I think it was just as difficult as the first time but faster.

One small change this time that isn’t a big deal but I’m glad I did – I didn’t wear a hospital gown this time. I brought a really comfortable black nursing bra. Before my water was broken I just wore the bra with some athletic shorts. After my water was broken I just put a sheet over me. The nurse was hesitant at first when I told her that’s what I wanted to do but later on she told me what a good idea it was. The hospital gown was in my way the first time. With the monitor on your belly and the IV in one arm and the blood pressure cuff on the other, it was just easier to have my stomach exposed. Also the gowns are so big and uncomfortable and I felt like the nursing bra actually provided more coverage for my pictures after the delivery than the gown did.

Colette nursed right away which was awesome and has been a nursing pro ever since! She had low blood sugar reading and they told me they had to give her formula. I was able to negotiate with the nursery nurse who really went to bat for me with the other nurses and my pediatrician. They had told me they had to give her formula or else they would take her to the NICU – what a scary thing to tell a parent. I told them that I wanted to nurse her again, then pump and feed her that with a bottle and then have them test her again. They agreed and she didn’t have any more issues. She also didn’t pass her hearing test the first time and that was a little scary but it turns out the thing wasn’t positioned correctly and she passed the next time with no problem.

That’s our story! The whole thing felt so different the second time! I’m glad it’s over. I went to my 6 week check up this week and my doctor told me I was made to have babies – i do not feel the same, but I sure love the 2 that I have!

Mommy Mondays – Cloth Diapers – “what we use” Edition

So I’ve mentioned on here before that we cloth diaper, but I don’t think I’ve ever given a whole lot of details on it. We started cloth diapering around the time Capri was 2 months old (I didn’t have any newborn size diapers that would fit her and I wasn’t ready to jump into the washing of cloth diapers while I was trying to figure everything else out! Not to mention, when you’re a first time mom, or maybe just if you’re me, it was really helpful to have the Pampers Swaddlers with the little line that changed color when the diaper needed to be changed!). Anyway, we’ve been cloth diapering for a year now. In case you’re interested, I thought I’d let you know what we use/do and how we’ve liked it.

Let’s start by saying I’m a HUGE proponent of cloth diapering! We love it (yes, my husband loves it too). There are so many reasons to do it – 1) cloth diapers are super cute, 2) it saves a TON of money 3) it’s good for the environment 4) less chemicals on your little baby…and I’m sure there are more but those are kind of my top reasons…

I think I might need to break this post up a bit…there’s a lot to talk about when it comes to cloth diapers. So I’ll start with just a post letting you know which diapers I’ve tried and what I’ve liked and disliked. I’m not receiving anything for my review or mention of these brands – it’s just my thoughts.

Gdiapers. I had heard a lot about Gdiapers and they are available at Target and Babies R Us, but I had some friends who had used them and didn’t highly recommend them so I didn’t plan on using them. However, our local grocery store, HEB, apparently had them as well and decided not to carry them anymore so they put them on clearance – I got 6 covers for under $10 – ridiculous! I also got some disposable inserts on clearance but went ahead and purchased the cloth inserts. I LOVED these! The ones I had purchased were smalls and I am so glad I got them because they were significantly smaller than all the other diapers I had and fit her great when we first started with cloth and they had way less bulk. Having liked them so much, I bought 4 more in medium when she grew out of them…sadly I did not like them as much in the larger size – I had trouble with leaks. So my conclusion - I loved them when she was little bitty but didn’t love them as she got older. They do come in the best colors though! They have a newborn kit that I have on my registry and would love to try with this next baby, but it’s pretty expensive so we’ll see…

GroVia. So, first I should say that I don’t technically have GroVia diapers. They were originally GroBaby and the 7 covers I have are GroBaby covers before they re-branded and I assume they made some changes to their diapers as well. Some of my snap-in soakers are the new ones though. I got these used for like $10 each which is awesome because I think they retail for over $20. I really loved these at the begining. I rarely use them now and the reason is this, 6 of the 7 were hook & loop (think velcro) and they wore out – again these are the old ones, hopefully this has been fixed with the new ones. That said, the one I have that has snaps is awesome. I’m planning on replacing the velcro sometime soon. That’s really been my only complaint with these. I know they say you can air out the cover and re-use it before washing. I tried that a few times and still thought it had a smell and decided not to do it…

Bumgenius AIO. These diapers are awesome! Of course, now they only make this in a newborn size :( Jeremy loves these – of course, they are sized and an all-in-one! I got 3 smalls on craigslist for $10 total and I don’t even think they were used! They were great when she was little because again, less bulk. I also have one in a medium and one in a large. I love these – super easy and I normally keep them in her diaper bag for when she’s at church or for the baby sitter because they are essentially just like a disposable. So I love these but again now they only sell these exact ones in the newborn size.

Bumgenius Elementals. I love these too! I had these from the very beginning and I think overall maybe my favorite. Definitely my favorite One Size diaper. They were bulky at the beginning but I felt like they still fit better when she was little than my other one size. These are spendy too since they are all in one and organic. I got my three pairs pre-owned and they were in excellent condition so I couldn’t even tell. I guess one complaint is that recently I’ve noticed some little holes in some of the cotton so I wonder if they wear is getting to them since we use them a lot. We used these as our nighttime diapers until we had to switch to disposables at night. I don’t think I’ve ever had a leak with these diapers.

Cotton Babies Econobum. This is a recent aquisition. In planning for the new baby I knew I would need to add some diapers to our stash and these are super inexpensive. I have been VERY happy with these! I just got the Trial Pack which is a cover and 3 prefolds. These prefolds are awesome – so thick! I love these and if I decide I need more this is probably what I’ll do.

FuzziBunz OS Pocket. Probably the only diaper I own that I do NOT like. Luckily I only have one. This has never fit her correctly and leaks almost every time I put it on her. You’d think it wouldn’t because it has adjustable leg gussetts but I can’t seem to get the right fit for her. And this is the reason I’m glad I did not just get a whole bunch of the same diaper – a word to the wise – get several different kinds – you won’t know what’s going to be best!

FuzzinBunz Perfect Size Pocket. I got one of these as a gift but I bought 4 of them on sale. All of mine are a size small and for a little while they have been some of my favorites. I love the practicality of a one size diaper, but sized diapers just have less bulk. All five of mine are a size small and at 14 months she still fits in them! To be fair, she’s pretty petite. I don’t think these fit her as soon as some of her other diapers, but they have lasted the longest of any of her sized diapers. I think these are great! By the way, this is what Capri is wearing in the picture above!

Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. This is another recent addition. I am thinking about using the Bummis Newborn Pack with our  next baby and thought I’d try out one of their covers with Capri. I have both flat diapers and prefolds that I put in it. I have really liked it so far and they have some cute colors. It’s another good route for an inexpensive diapering option.

ThinkLiz Pocket Diapers.  Finally, the backbone of my diaper stash. My awesome friend Beth over at ThinkLiz made me these diapers! Actually the ones pictured are almost all mine and the one in her tutorial is mine too! These are great! They are Jeremy’s favorites – he thinks they are cute and super easy to use. These have fit her the whole time and she still has plenty of room to grow in them. Thinking about making your own diapers? You should totally check out her tutorial!

In conclusion, I think variety is a great idea. I’ve loved each of my diapers more than others at a different stage with Capri. It’s been great to have several different kinds. I think now that I have the hang of it, I would venture more into the prefolds with covers as I have with the Bummis and Econobum but when I first started that seemed really overwhelming! So that’s what we have! If there was one other brand I would love to try – Thirsties – I hear great things about them, but alas it’s just not necessary right now! Do you have any questions?

Thoughts on my body…

That is just a weird title for a post, but I couldn’t come up with anything better so there it is. I wanted to write about something that I have thought about over the past couple of months since having baby Capri. I wanted to write about how my perspective of my body has changed. When I got pregnant I knew that my view of my body would inevitably be altered, that I would be amazed at all it could do to grow a tiny human and then of course push that tiny human out of me. And that was amazing. Even though I didn’t particularly enjoy pregnancy, I was amazed that there was a little person inside of me. The process of giving birth, now that I’ve had time to reflect on it, was also incredible. My body did and felt things it never had before and I had more strength and stamina in me than I knew prior to that experience. All those things were amazing and gave me a heightened respect and awareness of my body, but there is something else.

A perspective change that I hadn’t anticipated was at the fringes of my thoughts while pregnant but now that I’m no longer with child, I can see it very clearly. I had always taken my body for granted and never appreciated my health or strength. I’m not a particularly fit person and even though I want to be someone who works out, I rarely do. However, I’ve been blessed by pretty good health over the years and I had come to expect my body to be able to do pretty much anything I asked of it. While pregnant, especially nearing the end of my pregnancy, it was clear that my body was not my own and it wouldn’t or couldn’t do everything that it used to do and that frustrated me to no end. Now I think I appreciate my body so much more. It’s the little things like running up and down the stairs or moving heavy objects that I actually find a little bit of inner joy in now. It makes me feel stronger when I do those things because I think back to the time when I couldn’t.

All that to say, I’ve taken my health and body for granted. I love that my body will do what I tell it to do now. There are things about pregnancy that have changed my body and sometimes they bother me…my hips do not seem to be in the same place that they used to be and I scowl at my stretch marks every morning in the mirror, but my body had a baby and now I can do the things I used to again – I’m thankful.
